Michigan Week Dinner

The Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce held it’s 44th annual Michigan Week Dinner on Wednesday, May 9 at the Reed City High School cafetorium. As always, the dinner highlighted businesses in the Reed City community and stresses positive things happening in the area. George Freeman, City Manager and outgoing Chamber President, welcomed attendees and introduced John Calabrese as the new executive director of the Chamber and DDA. He saluted the Chamber Board members and recognized outgoing Board memberse Dave Langworthy and John Calabrese. Linda Dean, Chamber President for 2007-2008 provided a look ahead for the city and chamber, and honored George Freeman for his service to the chamber as president. Steve Westhoff, Superintendent of Reed City Area Schools, gave an overview of volunteers within the school system who are making a difference in the educational community.
In an address from new Mayor, Darlene Fuller-Talaske, she alluded to even more exciting things coming for Reed City. A new award for 2007 was presented by Mayor Fuller-Talaske – the Mayor’s Choice Award – to Vince Johnson, a student at Reed City Area High School. This award recognized Vince’s quest for excellence among the youth in the community. By his successes and positive influences, he serves as a role model to all of our youth.

Larry Emig and his traveling microphone solicited comments from area residents and new businesses. The Crossroads Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines provided musical entertainment, led by Jim Whitten.  The “Citizen of the Year” award was presented by Art Proefrock by Richard Karns for his many years of volunteerism and contributions to the community. The event always closes with the singing of the Old Rugged Cross (the world’s most famous hymn, written by Reed City resident Rev. George Bennard), led by Richard Karns with Larry Emig on piano. Pianist Randy Burson of Reed City Area High School provided piano music during the dinner and flowers were donated by Patterson’s Flowers.
